Over 40 car brands in South Africa offer a wide range of vehicles to suit a buyer’s needs, whether it be fuel efficiency, off-roading, speed, comfort, or luxury.
However, for most, it’s the price tag that counts, and this is wholly dependent on the brand you want to drive.
For those looking for the most affordable option, the Suzuki S-Presso is the cheapest car on the new vehicle market – with a starting price of R156,900 – which sold 206 units in October 2022 alone, according to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa).
Additionally, several other brands offer a car for under R200,000, including Hyundai, Toyota, Renault, and Mahindra.
If you’re looking to own one of the famous german brands like Audi, you’ll have to be willing to pay close to half a million rand, while Mercedes’ and BMW’s cheapest offerings are now over R600,000.
On the top end of the spectrum, ultimate luxury brands such as Lamborgini and Ferrari will require you to fork out a similar price for a sizable home – with their entry-level models costing over R4 million and R5 million, respectively.
Detailed below are the cheapest cars and their starting prices from every major South African brand. Manufacturers that do not disclose their pricing, such as McLarenAston Martin, and Rolls-Royce, are omitted.
