Police in Kakamega have impounded 12 vehicles that were flouting traffic rules along the Kakamega- Kisumu highway.
County Commissioner John Ondengo said police working with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) also netted 15 motorbikes and seven tuktuks during the crackdown launched this morning.
Ondengo said the crackdown will continue for the next thirty days through the Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) meant to ensure roads are safe for all users.
Speaking after leading the operation, Ondengo said the owners of the vehicles have been taken to court while the vehicles have been towed to Kakamega police headquarters.
“The exercise which is being conducted by a multi-agency team is expected to enhance discipline on roads and maintain road safety,” he said.
Ondengo said since the beginning of this year, Kakamega has lost 19 people through road accidents.
He said investigations have revealed that most of the accidents were caused by undisciplined road users and motorists who defy traffic rules.
“We have noted that road accidents are caused by undisciplined road users who defy traffic rules yet the rules are very clear. The Government is concerned to ensure that residents arrive at their destinations safely,” he pointed out.
The CC urged residents to cooperate with the police by not boarding vehicles that are full and reporting any instances of defiance of traffic rules.
From last week to date, the CC said, 20 people have been involved in road accidents in Kakamega. “Some hospitals are full of accident victims to the point of others setting aside specific wards for bodaboda accident victims,” he noted.
He warned those who drive without insurance covers that they will be charged in court while observing that others are notorious for using private insurance covers meant for private vehicles in commercial vehicles.
The NTSA Western Regional Manager Wilson Sangei said the RRI was meant to sensitize the public on the importance of road safety. He noted that as a multi-agency team they will ensure they clear non-compliance motor vehicles from the roads in the region.
Sangei said they are targeting vehicles without inspection stickers, those without road service license, drivers and touts who lack Public Service Vehicles (PSV) badges.
“We are also targeting motorcycle riders without helmets, insurance and ensuring motorcycles do not carry excess pillion passengers,” he added.
Kakamega Police Commander Hassan Barua said the exercise will be conducted across all the 12 sub counties
“We have enough police officers who will carry out the exercise in the sub counties in Kakamega,” he added.
