Preliminary reports have indicated that the bus which was involved in a grisly accident at the Subuiga area along the Meru-Nanyuki Road on Saturday, October 8, was operating illegally.
According to officers investigating the accident that left 12 people dead, the bus allegedly did not have a valid inspection certificate to declare it roadworthy.
The certificate recovered at the time of the accident had expired on July 15, 2021.
Party on Wheels bus also allegedly lacked a road service licence which details its registration number, route served, contact of the Sacco, Sacco name and expiry date of the license despite serving as a Public Service Vehicle (PSV).
Speaking to the media on Monday, October 10, Laura Khatiebi, Deputy Sub-county Commander, Buuri West, revealed that the bus driver lost control leading to the accident.
“He hit another motor vehicle from the rear and rammed another vehicle, pushing it into a fence.” Khatiebi stated.
The law enforcement officers investigating the accident have since summoned the bus owner to record a statement and explain how the bus was operating without the required documents.
However, by the time of this publication, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) had not yet issued a statement regarding the validity of the bus.
Customised Bus
According to photos shared online, the bus was customised to ferry revellers with a party-like experience.
The bus was reportedly fitted with a minibar allowing the revellers to drink while travelling. It also had a DJ booth, screens, speakers and LED light.
It also had a sink and other customised features allowing people to book the bus for adventures and road trips.
Fate of injured
Medics who attended to the injured indicated that 21 were still admitted at St Theresa Kiirua Hospital and that two had already been discharged.
Three other patients were released to recuperate at home at their own request. Seven more were rushed to Lifecare Hospital for further assessment.
Bodies of the dead were moved to the Meru Level IV Hospital mortuary.
