Have you heard of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA)? Do you know its mandate in Kenya? NTSA is a statutory body established to bring about sanity on our roads. It brings together under one roof the roles of motor vehicle registration, transport licensing and motor vehicle inspection, road safety, driver testing and to some extent, traffic law enhancement. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) introduced a new online platform-Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) where you can register and transfer your motor vehicle. NTSA TIMS was launched at the end of 2016 and had initially been available to car dealers. If you are selling or buying a motor vehicle, you will need an NTSA TIMS account. This is because NTSA declared that all motor vehicle transfer would be done online. This requires both the seller and the buyer to have an account on the NTSA portal.

Open the NTSA TIMS portal using the link ntsa.go.ke; you will see on the upper right corner a sign in button, click on it. This will enable you to view the registration and login interface.
NTSA provides many services to Kenyans among them the PSV application online. The PSV application forms are available on their website and can be filled and submitted through the same platform. Drivers can now obtain the license for PSV by filling the NTSA PSV license application as well as audit services. This platform has made it easier for drivers to acquire their licenses fast enough and they do not need to make physical appearances to the NTSA offices or make long queues.

NTSA logbook transfer has been made much easier and convenient by the introduction of the TIMS portal. Below are the steps on how you can transfer ownership of your vehicle online. This comes in handy especially when buying or selling your car. The transfer materializes within seven days.
Register for NTSA TIMS account- both parties should have a TIM account. You will need your ID card so that you can refer to your ID’s serial number (not the ID card number). Follow the prompts to ensure that registration has been successful and that your account has been created. You will receive an SMS on your phone giving the password. That is what you use to log in the first time.
Log in to TIMS through ntsa.go.ke. As part of the login process, you will receive a security code on your phone which you will be required to feed in on the TIMS system for verification.

NTSA TIMS has addressed the challenge of poor ICT systems that offer no linkage between payment and service delivery. NTSA portal also offers transparency in the registration process and has helped to cut off brokers who took advantage of citizens and made money from them. It has created a secure process for the registration of vehicles and the transfer of ownership. The NTSA TIMS account registration process that requires the information of the serial number on one’s identity card and not the identification number serves as a security measure to ensure that one cannot create an account using an already registered identification number, e-mail address, or mobile number. TIMS provides an automated transport system which has improved the flow of information in the transport sector and strengthened the traffic police department.
