There has been a 7.8 per cent increase in road accident fatalities between January and September compared to a similar period last year.
Latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority show that road accidents claimed 3,541 since beginning of the year to September 26 compared to 3,286 deaths over similar period in 2021.
The data shows that pedestrians still account for the highest casualties at 1,269 followed by motorcyclists at 941.
Pedestrians represent a 10.9 per cent increase from last year’s 1,144 while 3.8 per cent (941) more motorcyclists died over the period under review compared to 912 last year.

Similarly, fatalities involving pedal cyclists decreased to 49 from 63 reported last year, representing and -22.2 percent per cent drop.
Meanwhile, the number of drivers who perished in road accidents increased by 3.18 per cent from 314 to 324. 
In September alone, several accidents were reported across the country. 
Five people died Sunday evening in a grisly road accident involving a matatu and a lorry on Mombasa road in Makueni county.
The dead included a matatu driver, a woman and her three children.
Ten people also died after a Nissan matatu collided head-on with a tanker ferrying fuel in Homa Bay.
