Kenyans took to social media to lament over the rising trend of motorists speeding off after pumping fuel of obscene amounts at petrol stations within Nairobi.
The uproar among online users erupted after another motorist sped off from a station in Imara Daima shortly after fueling petrol worth Ksh12,000.
It was reported that the driver of a Mark X car model drove to the station and asked the attendant to pump the fuel. Immediately after, the motorist drove away.
The incident left the petrol attendant starring at a huge bill.
Consequently, CCTV images of the vehicle were shared online. Meanwhile, the attendant lodged a complaint at the Imara Daima Police Station.
The Occurrence Book (OB) number under which the matter was reported was also shared with many calling for the arrest of the driver.
“Why are these cases of running away without paying for fuel becoming rampant? We need to embrace ruthless consequences for such acts.
“It’s high time that such people should be arrested and taken to court. Let us not encourage them to misbehave in such a manner by giving them an opportunity to pay,” Omusamia Mwene opined.
Additionally, others called for petrol stations to make changes to their services such as making payments before fueling.
On the other hand, a section of users also called for the introduction of boom barriers, and rumble strips at stations among others.
“Fuel dealers should consider installing pre-paid, self-service fuel pumps. To unlock the service, you run your credit/debit card or pay by mobile money before the pump activates
“There will be no incentive to drive into a fuel station if one doesn’t have the intention to pay,” Gee Key added on Facebook.
The Imara Daima incident barely came days after another motorist drove off from a station along Jogoo Road after pumping the Ksh10,000.
Notably, after the incident went viral on social media, the motorist footed the bill.
