An unknown number of people are trapped inside a two-storey building that collapsed in the Kihunguro area in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
The individuals are suspected to have been on a vandalising mission in the building that was halfway demolished, according to Kiambu County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha.
The commissioner said the building was being demolished by Kenya National Highways Authority KeNHA officers to pave way for the expansion of the Eastern Bypass.
Nkanatha said that the building was to be flattened on Wednesday but the trapped individuals got to the building before KeNHA officers, on a mission to vandalise steel bars.
“There’s no justification as to what the individuals trapped in these rambles were doing inside the building which they could clearly see was being demolished. We suspect that they were up to vandalising steel and metal bars,” Nkanatha said.
“The building was to be fully brought down today (Wednesday) but those inside here came looking for metals when the incident happened,” said Nkanatha.
“We cannot confirm the number of people trapped until the rescue mission is complete,” he added.
Officers from the Kenya Defense Forces have already taken up the rescue mission.
By the time of going to press one badly mutilated body had been removed from the debris.
Nkanatha further said that another badly injured body can be seen from far and rescuers are working hard to remove it.
