The National Police Service (NPS) has embarked on nationwide crackdown on unroadworthy vehicle following an increase in the number of road accidents.
According statistics released by NPS, 3,541 road accident fatalities have been reported in the last nine months.
“We have recorded a total of 15,924 road crashes victims countrywide, 3,541 victims were fatally injured, 7, 236 persons seriously injured, while 5,147 were slightly injured,” Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso said in a statement
NPS indicated attributed the increase in accidents and fatalities to commuters not wearing seat belts, over speeding, poor maintenance of vehicles resulting in brake failures and tyre bursts.
Police will focus on seven key areas of compliance during the crackdown which include; PSV licence and badge validity verification, motor vehicle inspection sticker verification for PSVs and commercial vehicles, Fleet Speed monitoring, lane discipline enforcement to prevent overlapping and dangerous overtaking, and use of seatbelts by passenger.
“We also observe a sharp increase in fatalities among passengers and in the last one week 18th-26th September 2022 a total of 145 persons have perished,” Shioso noted
The police department indicated that the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will continue carrying public awareness on road safety to avert the unfortunate incidents.
“We note that our roads can be unforgiving, and we all have a responsibility to use them safely. As road users and stakeholders, we urge you to co-operate with the enforcement officers as they conduct this exercise and to always follow the laid down road traffic rules to ensure your safety and that of other,” Shioso said
