The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is preparing to undertake a Sh10.78 billion project that will see sections of a road that connects Kiambu Road to the Nairobi-Thika superhighway upgraded into a dual carriageway.
Although the project is titled Kiambu–Ngewa–Kibichoi Road, which is about 22km long, the scope of work extends beyond Kibichoi – covering the entire 62km-long B30 road that terminates at junction B30/A2 on Thika Road.
According to KeNHA, the road starts at Junction B32/B30 on Kiambu Road, opposite the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology, and proceeds through Kirigiti, Riabai, Ngewa, Kibichoi, Nembu, Ichaweri, Gatundu, Kang’oo, Mang’u and ends at Thika Road.
“Sections of the road will be constructed to dual carriageway, single carriageway while further work will be evaluation of the road capacity and pavement evaluation,” says an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report on the project.

The project is split into six segments. The 12km stretch from Kiambu Road to Ngewa will be upgraded into a dual carriageway, while the 10km section between Ngewa and Kibichoi will be designed to single carriageway rural road standards.
A road capacity and pavement evaluation will be undertaken on the 22km stretch from Kibichoi to Kang’oo through Ichaweri and Gatundu, which is currently under construction.
The 4km stretch from Kang’oo to Mang’u will be designed to single carriageway rural road standards, while the 14km segment from Mang’u junction to Thika Road will be designed to dual carriageway road standards.
The dualling of Kiambu Road-Ngewa segment and the Mang’u-Thika Road stretch is hoped to end traffic snarl-ups that are currently witnessed on the two sections due to increased number of homes in the area hosting people who work in neighbouring towns.
The upgrade of the Kiambu–Ngewa–Kibichoi–Thika road, which is set for completion by June 2022, is expected to further fuel the growth of real estate in Kiambu County.
