YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Sales of new vehicles to residents of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties were substantially lower in 2022 compared with the previous year, according to a dealer’s association report.
Data provided by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association show that sales of new cars and trucks to tri-county area residents plunged 20% during 2022, as dealers struggled with tight inventories and manufacturers wrestled with supply-chain constraints.
According to the report, local buyers purchased 23,223 new vehicles in 2022 compared with 29,257 in 2021, a decline of 20.6%.
Among local dealers, Sweeney Chevrolet registered the highest volume of new car sales for the year with 1,343 sold, followed by Boardman Subaru with 1,214 units sold. Taylor Kia of Boardman reported the third highest in volume with 1,190 new units sold, Greenwood Chevrolet reported the fourth highest at 1,170 sold, and Fred Martin Ford reported the fifth best volume sales at 1,065 new units.
Sales of new vehicles to local residents were also down during December, the automobile dealers association reported. Dealers report they sold 1,784 new cars and trucks during the month to local buyers compared with 2,089 during the same period in 2021, a drop of 14.6%.
Boardman Subaru posted the most volume of new vehicle sales in December with 134, the report said. Sweeney Chevrolet was second highest with 117, Fred Martin Ford posted 95 new vehicle sales, Greenwood Chevrolet reported it sold 94, and Stadium Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac listed 84 new vehicles sold.
Sales of used vehicles slumped slightly last year, the dealer’s report shows.
Overall sales of used vehicles to tri-county residents stood at 25,642 units in 2022 compared with 26,951 sold during 2021, a decline of 4.8%.
During December, local customers purchased 1,828 used vehicles compared with 1,999 during the same period in 2021, a decline of 8.5%.
