The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has assured motorists of minimal disruption of transport along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway as the demolition of the Gilgil weighbridge kicked off.
According to the authority, the exercise will be carried out at night when traffic flow is light to avoid inconveniencing motorists.
The roads authority was however quick to caution drivers to use alternative routes between Saturday and Monday to facilitate a smooth removal of the bridge.
KENHA cluster manager the Gilgil toll station Maurice Ademba said the work is expected to happen during curfew hours, in order to minimize interruptions along the busy highway.
Motorists have been advised to use the Njabini flyover (near Soko Mjinga Market) – Njabini-Engineer -Okalou Gilgil route or Lanet (Nakuru)-Dundori-Ol Joro Orok-Olkalou-Engineer-Njabibini -Njabini Flyover.
According to Ademba, apart from the alternative routes provided, the authority will work hand in hand with the traffic department for smooth flow of traffic.
“We want to ensure vehicles plying the route follow the provided guidelines, in consideration to the provided deviations within that area,” he said.
The demolition is expected to be complete by Monday evening, as a new bridge fitted with lighting and cameras was earlier erected to ensure weighbridge operations continue smoothly even as the demolition is going on.
