Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) officials on Thursday inspected the 630-kilometre fibre optic cable project whose construction started in 2020.
Board Chairman Wangai Ndirangu led members in inspecting the project that is aimed at ensuring the residents of Uasin Gishu, West Pokot and Turkana are connected to the internet and enhance service delivery.
“Eng Ndirangu led members of the Board and Management to inspect the ongoing civil works for the laying of a fibre optic cable along the Eldoret – Lokichar – Nakodok National Trunk Road,” KeNHA said.
The ICT authority said laying the fibre cable on the 630 km corridor from Eldoret to Nadapal at the border of Kenya will be a crucial link to South Sudan.
ICT Authority CEO Katherine Getao said once completed, the project will support economic initiatives such as fishing in Lake Turkana as well as irrigation and animal resources in northwestern Kenya.
The Board also paid a courtesy call to West Pokot County Commissioner and inspected the newly constructed Kainuk Bridge.
They also visited the maintenance works of Kitale – Kapenguria – Morpus, Morpus – KWS Gate, and KWS Gate – Lokichar and Lokichar – Lodwar projects.
“The progress of works for the section between Eldoret and Lokichar currently stands at 28 per cent, while that between Lokichar to Nakodok is at 43 per cent,” KeNHA said.
KeNHA is also constructing a road along the same corridor that will help open up the region.
The Ongoing works along the corridor include:
1. Main road trenching
2. Laying of High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE )ducts including protection works
3. Installation of manholes and hand holes
4. Gabion construction
5. River crossing and protection works.
