IRA says  there is a lack of proper information on general traffic rules and the importance of insurance among most riders, leading to lawlessness and unnecessary loss of lives.
Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority indicates that at least 1.4 million motorcycles are registered in Kenya, the majority of which are used as bodabodas.
Nearly 17,000 motorcycles are registered each month, however observers say the sector is poorly regulated.
Boda-boda drivers operators who are majority men aged 18 to 36, have a reputation for breaking traffic laws and attacking motorists in accidents.
As such, the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) in conjunction with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) say a critical mass of boda boda riders lack requisite knowledge of insurance and traffic rules.
IRA says the campaign dubbed Bima Mashinani targets to take the insurance message to the grassroots to ensure that more Kenyans are covered.
Currently, IRA says 38 million Kenyans do not have any form of insurance cover.
