A traffic snarl-up along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Friday evening saw hundreds of motorists and passengers spend the night on the busy road.
According to reports, the gridlock started at Gilgil weighbridge at around 7 pm leaving motorists heading to Nakuru and Nairobi stranded.
In a statement on Saturday, the Kenya National Highways Authority urged motorists to use alternative routes.
“Further to our earlier advisory, motorists planning to travel between Nairobi and Nakuru are advised to use fly over-Njabini-Olkalou-Lanet routes,” KenHa said.
“Trucks are advised to delay their travels until the situation eases at Gilgil. Every effort is being made to enable traffic to start flowing.”
A passenger, Pharis Kariuki said that the wrecks had blocked one side of the road leading to a slight jam.
The situation was worsened by overlapping drivers and within 30 minutes the section of the road was completely blocked according to him.
“This was a small problem worsened by impatient drivers who have now been forced to spend the night here,” he said.
In addition, a truck driver Joel Mwadimu blamed Kenyan’s queer habits for the jam adding that there were fears that they could spend the better part of the day on the section of the road.
Mwadime called on stringent laws to deal with overlapping drivers adding that a section of the road had been completely blocked with four lanes on either side.
Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said that they were working closely with their counterparts in Gilgil to help unlock the jam.
“This problem has been caused by overlapping drivers who became impatient but our officers are on the ground looking for a way of clearing the jam,” he said.
