The 2022 Economic Survey report indicated that the number of newly registered motor vehicles recorded an increase of 14.2%, from 94,128 units in 2020 to 107,499 units in 2021.
Station wagons accounted for the bulk of newly registered vehicles as new 64,350 units were registered in 2021, up from 57,962 in 2021.
The report revealed there was an increase in registration of saloon cars (5.4 %), lorries and trucks (9.2%), trailers (33.8%) and wheeled tractors (10.7%).

However, the registration of minibuses and matatus declined from 1,084 units in 2020 to 822 units in 2021.

On July 12, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that his administration would establish a national automotive council, a statement by State House, Kenya noted.
The council will facilitate the implementation of the National Automotive Policy geared towards boosting the local assembling of motor vehicles.
Uhuru spoke when he launched the locally assembled Euro 4 Mitsubishi L200 pickup at State House, Nairobi.
Mobius motors Kenya began operations in Mombasa as an automaker. The firm later shifted its designing, manufacturing, and selling vehicles to Nairobi.

In August 2021, Mobius Motors unveiled a new series off the production line; the Mobius 3.
The sports utility vehicle (SUV), which retails at KSh 3.95 million excluding Value Added Tax (VAT), is built for city driving experiences and the ability to handle rough terrain.
According to the automaker, the car is priced to compete with the secondhand imports that have flooded the Kenyan market.
The overall design of Mobius 2 takes after the SUV with sufficient capabilities for manoeuvring on rural roads that have rough terrains.
The vehicle is designed, manufactured and sold in Kenya. It has a gross weight of 2275kg and a loading capacity of 625kg.

In related news, the Kenya Bureau of Standards released a list of vehicles that won't be allowed to be imported into Kenya effective July 2022.
The standards body noted that all used passenger minibus, midibus, large buses, single articulated, bi-articulated buses and double-decker buses shall not be allowed for importation into the country.
It also stated that all second-hand vehicles older than eight years from the first year of registration shall not be imported.
