How much CO2 does your average new car spew out every kilometre? So much depends on the car, the fuel and how you drive it but I honestly had to check for something approaching official average figures (though they can be disputed too, no doubt.)
The average new car in Ireland emits 112.6g/km, which is a bit below the European average. The figures are compiled by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association and the last published were for October.
The trend has been downward here for some time, and the growth in purchases of new electric cars, hybrids and plug-in hybrids is contributing.
I’m prompted to mention this by way of a survey doing the rounds in which its authors were shocked that 58pc of people didn’t know how much the average internal combustion engine (as opposed to all power sources) emits each year.
The thing is, 42pc guessed correctly: 1,700kg of C02 each year, according to the carwow and Karai survey. I’m shocked so many guessed correctly.
