Four people have been rescued in suspected militia attack in Witu, Lamu County.
Police said the four who included two women of Italian origin were rescued after they were held hostage by suspected militia in Witu forest early Thursday morning.
Witu is a small town in Lamu County.
Police said the two were rescued from a grey salon car KCR 975A during the 5.45am incident.
Two bodies were also recovered from an Isuzu lorry KCY 224 U.
They had bullet wounds.
Police said on Wednesday at around 0930 hrs, officers aboard a GKB 205 U vehicle left GSU Hqrts enroute to Mokowe under I/c of C.I Gituma Of GSU C coy.
On reaching Witu forest at around 1745 hrs they encountered a road block laid by suspected Al Shabaab militia numbering about 10 who disguised as KDF officers.
“They had stopped around 4 vehicles before our arrival. They fired at our vehicle several shots,” an officer stated.
“We took cover and responded forcing them to flee in the forest while firing at us. We sought reinforcement from RDU Nyaatha, GSU Kasakairu, SOG Nyangoro and KDF who arrived later.”
Police said on quick scan of the scene, the following were found; KCR 975A grey saloon car with two female occupants of Italian origin.
They were both rescued.
Also recovered was a KCY 224U Isuzu lorry with two people fatally shot and a damaged fuel tank.
Another vehicle KCK 380K Isuzu lorry had two occupants who were rescued.
There was also a KBF 035U Honda Saloon with several gun shots but no occupants.
Police said a burnt motorcycle whose registration number wasn’t visible and owner not seen was also found at the scene.
Witu subcounty police commander was called to the scene to process it.
Police said on the ensuing exchange, the GKB 205 U was shot at and front left tyre and ATF power stirring damaged.
